I Hate Shakespeare!

JAN 21,22,23 2022
Tickets: Adults $10 // Student Grades 12th and lower – Free

Shakespeare is complex and replete with nuance. The language is flowery and difficult to follow, especially if you aren’t familiar with the material. It’s no surprise that the Bard’s repertoire is not for everyone. The Peacock takes that antipathy head on with Steph DeFerie’s play, I Hate Shakespeare!, and runs with it, developing an entire skit show about people not appreciating the 16th-century playwright. The jokes make fun of material that is by now generations old, but somehow still eerily relevant today. The skits land dead-center, poking fun at the language or laughing at the over-wrought drama: how does Hamlet take an entire play to enact his revenge when a simple sword swipe would get the whole thing over with? What if Juliet could resolve her suitor problem by going on The Dating Game? I Hate Shakespeare! isn’t highbrow comedy or big drama, but a down-to-earth comedy show for the “everyman.” The everyman that enjoys the adventure of life with a few “what thinkest thou?” and a Talking Cow tossed in…oh, and you knew about the zombies, right?

This comic gem follows one typical American family over the course of thirty years’ worth of holiday reunions. Starting in 1980, Ruthie and Bill’s grown children — a priest, an aspiring actress, and a former football star — all return home, and reveal their plans and dreams as they embark on their adult lives. The empty-nester parents contend with their own changes, too, as old family rituals are trotted out and ancient tensions flare up. As time passes, the family discovers that, despite what we may have in mind, we often arrive at unexpected destinations! “A powerful moving story that makes you cry from laughing so much in the beginning, to making you cry because it touches your heart in the end.” Steve Wilson, Kansas City Examiner

Tribute (A Celebration of the Allman Brothers Band)

JUN 4, 2022
Tickets: Adult $39 / Student $35

TRIBUTE – a celebration of The Allman Brothers Band is a powerful 8 piece group that faithfully recreates the music of one of the finest bands of all time. Since its founding in 2013, Atlanta-based TRIBUTE has earned a reputation as the source for the authentic ABB sound around Atlanta and throughout the Southeast. Rigged with vintage equipment, they interpret the Allman catalog in such a way that these songs written in the ‘60s and ‘70s come alive again. If the band has learned anything from performing these songs, it is the realization that even though The Allman Brothers Band has shut down, their music maintains the same power over people just as it did 50 years ago. It is a phenomenon TRIBUTE gladly verifies every time they hit the stage. TRIBUTE recalls that unique period in American rock, when psychedelia ebbed and The ABB informed us what jazz, rock, country and blues could sound like. Comprised of musicians with decades of performance experience, the members of TRIBUTE bring their shared love of The Allman Brothers Band to life when it comes time for hittin’ the note.

Toubab Krewe

SEP 3, 2022
Tickets: Adult $39 / Student $35

Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound. Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their latest release, STYLO, (March 2nd, 2018). What Justin Perkins (Kora, Kamelngoni, guitar, percussion), Terrence Houston (drumset), Drew Heller (guitar, organ), Justin Kimmel (bass, keys), and Luke Quaranta (Djembe, Congas, Dundun, Sangban, Kinkini) have wrought on STYLO reflects the many miles and musical journeys that have transpired since their last studio album, TK2. This is a band that actively draws inspiration from whatever source floats into their purview, something they’ve exhibited in their decade and a half of heavy gigging, including regular appearances at major U.S. festivals like Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Rothbury and Wakarusa, and abroad at such legendary gatherings as the Festival In The Desert in Essakane, Mali. Whether on their own or collaborating with luminaries like the Last Poets’ Umar Bin Hassan or Uncle Earl’s Rayna Gellert, Toubab Krewe has already earned the attention and respect of a broad musical community. Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, no doubt picked up during the group’s travels to study and live in Guinea, Ivory Coast and Mali. But what truly differentiates Toubab Krewe from other Statesiders inspired by African music is how they innovate on what they’ve learned instead of simply recreating tradition. Toubab Krewe carves out a new trail honoring the African originators they admire by making something alive and contemporary.
